About

Welcome to Castle Rock Mountain

Nestled along historic Texas Highway 281, Castle Rock Mountain is a former motor court lodge with origins dating back to the early 20th century. Positioned on a key travel route stretching from the Mexican border to Canada, it played a vital role in the early days of the U.S. highway system—offering food, lodging, fuel, and motor services to weary travelers.

Over the decades, Castle Rock has witnessed the evolution of American road travel and holds a past steeped in legend. During Prohibition, it is said to have been a hotspot for bootlegged liquor and lively social gatherings. The lodge has welcomed many notable guests, including the infamous Bonnie and Clyde, adding to its rich tapestry of history and folklore.

In 2015, the property was acquired with the vision of restoring and reimagining its legacy. Monte Laster and Jeff Tometich—co-owners of a Paris-based design studio—are leading the ongoing restoration efforts, aiming to transform the lodges into functional cabins for future guests. Beyond lodging, Castle Rock Mountain will serve as a creative hub, hosting artist-in-residence programs in collaboration with the French American Creative Exchange (FACE USA).
